Legal framework in Belgium: increasing obligations regarding indoor air quality

The choice for CO₂ and climate monitoring aligns with the evolving Belgian legislation regarding indoor air quality in enclosed, publicly accessible spaces.

The federal regulations provide for a phased obligation for ventilation and CO₂ measurement, with the first strict obligations coming into effect on1 January 2027.

Key points:

  • Obligation from 2027
    From 1 January 2027, rules regarding indoor air quality will be mandatory for specific categories of enclosed public spaces.
  • CO₂ meter and action plan
    Operators of public places must have a CO₂ meter that meets legal requirements.
    When air quality does not meet standards, a risk analysis and action plan must be drawn up.
  • Full obligation by 2038
    The law provides for a phased process that runs until at least 1 January 2038.
  • Hospitality and sports sector
    For hospitality and sports clubs, obligations regarding CO₂ measurements and risk analyses already apply during the transition period.
  • Schools
    For primary education, a stricter deadline applies:
    from1 July 2025all classrooms must be equipped with CO₂ meters.
